Bypassing web filters!

November 29th, 2009

Unfortunatley in many organizations and workplaces or even schools, social sites such as facebook or myspace, or video sites like youtube and metacafe are blocked.

Fortuantley there is a way around (actually 5 of them!):

1) Proxy Server

When you are using a proxy server, you are actually browsing the web through a remote computer, thus not contacting them directly so the ISP’s (or the company hardware/software) filter cannot detect it.

Using free proxies can be cumbersome and not very reliable, but you can find a list here.

2) Google Cache/Translator

Proxies are all good, till they are being filtered themselves. That is why I am going to show you another source of bypass.

GOOGLE.

Just search for the desired page in google, and click the “cached” link instead of the title.

This works because the “cached”  link is not actually the site itself, but a mirror that google has downloaded to their server.

You are contacting google, and not the filtered site. And no one is going to cut off google! (well except chian or iran…)

Translate works the same way.

3) Use SSL!

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is an encryption of the link between your computer and the server you are trying to reach. Many sites use this for various reasons.

If you’d like to check if the website you are willing to reach supports this option, just ad an ‘S’ to the http of the URL  -like this: https://www.blockedsite.com

4) External Browser

Not so comfortable way, but the most effective.

When all other options fail, you can use external Browser such as opera mini which allows you to access the web in an entirely remote manner, in which no filter is able to cut you off.

Though it is quite frustrating using a phone browser on your desktop, it works almost with every site I’ve tested.

5) WAP proxy

WAP proxies, just like normal proxies are based on a remote server that grabs the data for you, but in this case, instead of delivering you exactly what is there, it “WAPpifies” it for you, thus making it readable for a mobile wap browser. Very ugly, and uncomfortable, but works ALWAYS.

If there is a site that you just MUST visit and check out, and it is filtered badly, ‘WAPpify’ it using these tools:

http://www.google.com/gwt/n

http://mlvb.net/?

http://iyhy.com/

Good luck!
